These Waxbills are found in the northern parts of South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. They inhabit dry savanna, thickets and denser riverine thornbush. Violet-eared waxbills are usually solitary or in pairs, often to be seen in the company of Blue Waxbills. They feed on the ground on seeds and insects. During courtship their wings make a buzzing sound.
